When to go
Fiji works throughout the year, but April to November generally brings the most consistent swell. May to September is the period I'd look at if your priority is serious swell and the possibility of bigger swells. During this time, the trade winds blow consistently and offer up a great chance to participate in wind sports also like kiting, wing-foiling, foiling and down wind runs.
Outside those months, the surf can still be very good. December till March can be a great time for beginner surfers as the waves are typically smaller with lighter winds. The waves are often smaller and the conditions can be more relaxed, although tropical weather and cyclones become a consideration during the summer months.
Where I'd stay
For a dedicated surf trip, Namotu Island Resort puts you on the door step of Mamanuca breaks. Namotu is particularly attractive because of their proximity to the surf and the ability to get out on the water quickly without a fixed schedule. There are 5 waves within a 5min boat ride of the island. The local Fijian hospitality is like no other. Their smiles and kindness is what really makes a luxury surf trip to Fiji memorable.

World-class waves, warm water and plenty of variety
Fiji has some of the most famous waves in the South Pacific, but one of the things I like most about it is the variety.
The Mamanuca Islands are home to Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Tavarua Rights, Namotu Lefts, Swimming Pools and Wilkes, giving experienced surfers plenty to chase while also offering beginners and intermediate surfers more manageable waves when conditions are smaller.
I have been leading bespoke, luxury surf trips to Fiji for over a decade now and each trip my guests fall in love with the waves, people and natural beauty.
There are playful waves around the Mamanucas, along with beginner-friendly options such as Swimming Pools and Namotu Lefts.
Who is Fiji suited to?
Best for:
Intermediate to advanced surfers
Beginner surfers during the shoulder season December till March
Surfers wanting to surf famous reef breaks
Couples and families who want good accommodation as well as good waves
Groups of friends
Surfers who want the flexibility to move between different breaks
For less experienced surfers, I'd choose the accommodation and location carefully. You don't need to be a Cloudbreak charger to have a fantastic surf trip in Fiji.
My advice
Don't book Fiji simply because you want to surf Cloudbreak.
I'd rather know what you're capable of surfing and what sort of trip you want first. On the right day, Cloudbreak can be unforgettable. On another day, a smaller, less intimidating wave may actually give you the best surfing of the trip. There is something for every level of surfer here.
For me, the goal is always to put you in the right place for your ability and the conditions — not simply tick a famous wave off the list.
